Weeks of April 16 and April 23

Time Flies!  We have had plenty of interesting things happening in our class over the past couple weeks.

First off:   Hello Adeline in Japan.  We hope you're having an incredible time and not too stressed about the whole month you'll be away learning about Japanese culture and landscapes.  We look forward to your sharing when you return.

Subjects Update:

Mathematics:

Students took two assessments in Unit 4, multiplication and division of fractions, and studied the first half of the unit and selected key topics in the second part of the unit.  There is more work to be done here, but what remains are essentially advanced applications and multi-step problems.  To have the students more broadly prepared for the State exams, I've had the student detour from the remainder of fractions unit and cover these topics:

1.  Unit 6: Coordinate Plane, including additional practice in identifying the characteristics and comparing geometric shapes, angles, and relationships of sides.  We applied our knowledge of describing the location of objects on a coordinate plane by creating and playing "Battleship" on grid paper.

2.  A practice review of long division and double-digit multiplication,.

3.  Lessons on calculating perimeter and area of 2-dimensional shapes, including when having some unknown sides that students need to generate based upon reasoning and knowledge of shapes.

4.  Calculating the area of a triangle.

5.  Building, drawing, and reasoning about the volume of rectangular prisms using manipulatives, graph paper, and dot paper.  The first focus is on cubic centimeter blocks.

They also studied physical science, including "How can Matter Change?" which covers themes such as evaporation, condensation, physical, and chemical changes.
