Academic Calendar and Connections for the Week of April 2

Spring Break:  No school April 9 - 16!

American Colonies In Depth Unit

This week, Tuesday - Friday, all morning, the District is conducting GLAD training in our classroom.  There will be four presenting teachers and about 12 current teachers learning about ways of teaching that are beneficial for English Language Learners but valuable for all students. The training for the teachers is done through the students learning with the presenting teachers about the American Colonies in depth.

Scheduling modifications: Specials will be in the afternoon after lunch.  This means the afternoons will be devoted to brief math and reading sessions.  Most time will be devoted to students learning about and practicing descriptive writing. Given the Colonies project, students will not take a grammar test this week.

On Friday students will write a five paragraph descriptive essay.

Mathematics

(Mon.) We are solving mixed decimal and fractional number sentences like:
        1  7/10 x 0.2
Students are solving with models and converting the decimal to a fraction (i.e. 0.2 = 2/20) and then students solve in the manner they have learned.

(Wed.) We are also working on decimal division like:  1.72 /  0.8  (lesson 30) and in this case multiplying by a factor of 10 or 100 to convert the decimal numbers to whole numbers.

Students and teacher analyze anchor papers together.  Through analyzing student papers, we learn how to organize descriptive writing around focal points and/or based upon senses.  For example, the focal point of the first body (2nd overall) paragraph of Descriptive Essay Sample Number 1, is to give a panoramic overview of activities on the beach. The next paragraph of that student essay has less of a focal point, but is organized around the topic of the beach and tactile (touch) impressions.

We solidify concepts of paragraphing: projecting body paragraphs in the introduction, having a topic sentence for each paragraph, and using transitions. We explore different techniques for drawing the reader in and tying things up in a satisfying way.

Adeline and Liam, if you are reading this, and you have time to write now, I'll provide the anchor papers (Examples of student writing) in the HW - Language Arts / Writing Folder / Descriptive Writing Folder.  You can access this Google Drive folder from the dropdown menu and click on "Homework Help."  This is a perfect assignment to connect to travels and asks you to be very observant of a special place
