Academic Calendar and Connections for the Week of March 26

Science Fair:  Friday, March 30

IVE PTA invites you to enjoy a night of science at our Science Fair this Friday, March 30th, from 7-8:30pm in the Multi Purpose Room.

·         Science Fair Event Details:
o   The event will take place in the IVE MPR and Gym, with presenter set up starting at 6:30pm.  An earlier announcement indicated the set up would be at 6:00.  With the viewing beginning at 7:00, setting up at 6:30 should allow ample time.
In addition to seeing some cool science fair projects, the Gibson Ek Robotics Team and University of Washington Scientists will be there conducting demonstrations. Come check it out!

Students should bring their completed tri-folds to class M-FRI.  Students will do their tri-fold set up in the MPR on Friday at school during the school day.   If there are demonstration materials, these should be brought directly to the fair by the student and their family for set up just prior to the event. This gives one last opportunity to bring in the tri-fold to school as well.

In Science Class, we continue with Boeing Engineering Unit on Designing a Bolt Catcher and learning about Newton's Three Laws of Motion.  We created a data table to write a descriptive summary of tested materials.  We also reviewed the Steps of a Scientific Experiment, focusing on Procedures, Testing, Recording and Presenting Data.

In Math we continue our practice of Division and Multiplication of fractions in word problems, but are also reviewing some essential concepts and skills from earlier units or math facts important to 5th grade.  Topics include:

Acute, Right, and Obtuse angles and triangles
factors and factor trees
prime and composite numbers
prime factorization
Estimation of multidigit division problems
Multidigit multiplication with the traditional algorithm and area model

There is no required math homework on Wednesday or Thursday to allow students extra time to work on Science Projects

In Language arts we are working on the non-fiction science reading unit

We are studying:
Note-taking for information
cause and effect
complex cause and effect chains

Our writing work has been integrated into reading and focused on:
Annotating science articles with these tools/ considerations:   questions, wonderings, confusions, Surprises, speculations, and connections

We have had science articles to annotate for homework on Wednesday and Thursday.

We also have continued with our read aloud:  Weedflower
