Weeks of January 22 and January 29

Highlights:

Students are researching the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge generally and are also taking notes on for writing a feature article.  Their feature article will be on a sub-topic of their choosing.

Students have each had 5+ days for research - 2 guided and three independent and they have been collecting their research sheets in their binders.  After students write a draft of their papers in Microsoft Word, they will then be able to paste their text in a Publisher document.  In publisher students will add text features and images with captions.  Their article will be researched-based and have a bibliography.

Reading / Cross Cultural Studies Highlight: Chinese immigrants in the 1800s

From Making-Meaning we read: "Old Ways of Working in a New World,"  which focused on Chinese immigration in the 1800s for working in mining, agriculture, and the fishing industry. The article also highlighted discrimination against the Chinese as well as anti-immigration policies set up by the U.S. Government in 1882 - which lasted until 1943.
