Connections and Curriculum for the Week of January 8

Note: No School Monday in Observance of Martin Luther King, JR.

Friday

In Global/Integrated Studies (Social Studies, Current Events, Science, and Language Arts) students selected their own research article on the Internet, gained approval to use it, and then read and took research notes on the article.  

Mrs. Pickard visited the class and shared a read aloud regarding segregation in the south in celebration of Martin Luther King Day.

In Math students had two Exit tickets - for lessons 5 and 6 and we began Math Applications problems and lesson 7.  After lesson 7, students will have a review, and then a Mid-Module Test. I will be counting the Mid-Module test with the same grading value as the End of Module Test. 

Students had extended Music practice in the morning. 

In Language Arts we also shared promoted Story ending changes to the Winnebago Ant Origin story. 

Students turned in their spelling/ vocabulary packets and took spelling and vocabulary quizzes.  

Thursday

  

In Global/Integrated Studies (Social Studies, Current Events, Science, and Language Arts) students watched a U.S.A. Today video on the history of the debate on drilling versus conservation in the ANWR.

We also practiced taking research notes on an article in Newsweek on President Trumps and Senator Lisa Murkowski's messages of the benefits of opening the parts of the ANWR to oil and natural gas drilling. 

In Reading students evaluated each other's Cereal Box Book Reports, evaluating one friend's and one randomly assigned box.  They also self-evaluated their own biography book report. 

In mathematics students were assigned cooperative learning pairs and worked on lessons 5 and 6, which are extensions of lessons 3 & 4, but focusing on the subtraction of fractions of unlike denominators.  HW:  Unit 3, Lesson 5 (1 page), lesson 6 (1 page) . Click here for HW copies



Wednesday

In mathematics students learned about adding fractions that would result in a sum between 1 and 2 (mixed numbers) using the rectangular fraction model.  HW Lesson 4

In Word Building, students were given direction and time to complete their vocabulary / spelling packets.  These are due on Friday.  The quizzes on understanding the meaning and spelling are also on Friday.

In Reading students shared their alternative story endings for the Winnebago origin story and promoted story endings to be read to the whole class.

Students had an extra 25 minutes of music practice for the Winter performance. 


Tuesday

In Reading we practiced finding the main idea in a passage about the use of  guide dogs for the in history.  The non-fiction article began with a story vignette, which which has the effect of delaying the focus upon the broader main idea.  This format proved difficult for the group as a whole, but we gained insight in the concluding debrief and students revised their work. 

For Writing students wrote the main idea and supporting details for their reading passage.  

In mathematics students learned about adding fractions using the rectangular fraction model, lesson 3. 

Reteach topic:  application problems in calculating area.

In Word Building, students were given their differentiated spelling / vocabulary packets and time to begin them.

In Science, students practiced note-taking key vocabulary with drawings with teacher guidance on the topic of classifying organisms. 




Monday


In Life Science, students are beginning to learn the classification system for living organisms. We will use this knowledge as a basis for further reading on the wildlife diversity in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

In Language Arts

Students read a Winnebago Origin of Ants story, practicing reading actively with response notes and predicting/ making questions.  They shared ideas in a literacy circles and then wrote an alternative ending.

In L.A. / Word Work, students began Unit 6, spelling.

In Mathematics, Lesson 2, Part II

Students studied rewriting fractional values as a sum of fractions, and then as multiplication equations. They represented these sums as mixed numbers on a number line. They learned conversion of improper fractions to mixed numbers.

In Computers/ Math students explored the District recommended Youcubed website as a possible "differentiation menu choice."  Advanced math students were encouraged to set up an account at home.
