Lockdown Drill:  Students performed a lock down drill.  The behavior of several boys who could not remain quiet for the 5 minute drill made for an unsuccessful practice in our classroom.  As this happened in the afternoon Thursday, and due to other obligations, I have not been able to fully follow up with these students.  Given the importance of the event, I'll communicate this with the Assistant Director on Monday. Students were given multiple instructions to complete the drill in complete silence.

Language Arts: Students were assigned a biography book report that is due in a little over a month (Tuesday, December 12).

They were given an assignment packet and the project.  The project's requirements include that the report be completed on a cereal box and  that students create a (written) "commercial" promoting their book.

For this first book report I have assigned students to read and report on a biography or autobiography.  I provided a cart full of library biographies today and after a review period, most students checked out a book for the project from these. Several students want to find a book from a public library or read one already at home. That's fine.  Please check in with your child about their choice; it's a welcome opportunity for discussion.

Please look for a letter through the Homework Help Link.  Additional information will be available in the Language Arts/ Book Report folder.  There you will be able to find a few more specifics about report check ins and extra support that will be available to students during the next month to help them complete the report.  In the meantime, students should start reading right away.

A bit of suggested homework:  Students went home with spelling/ vocabulary packets.  These are due Tuesday and there will be a spelling test that day.  They have had two days to study so far.  I suggest they study some on the long weekend and not leave it all for Monday night to finish.

Math Differentiation:  Advanced Math students wrote Mid-module I can statements and searched for model questions for each learning target.  ELL students examined application questions in lessons 1-10 looking for questions whose wording clearly suggested the necessary algorithms need to solve the problems.  Other students worked on Zearn or helped with a class door art project.

Wednesday:

Mathematics:  We differentiated math today. Students who needed additional help were supported in lessons 14-15.   Students worked on Unit conversions in the metric and American standard systems, worked in partnerships assisting each other, and or worked on Zearn.  There is no math homework today, however learning on Zearn is encouraged.

Language Arts:  Students were given differentiated spelling packets as well as a paragraph editing worksheet.  The first four pages of the spelling packet were assigned for homework tonight as well as the second side of the paragraph editing sheet.
