Your child will bring home their Unit 1 mathematics assessment Cover sheet which breaks down their test results into 12 target objectives (16 for advanced math students). Students returned home with their actual tests a week ago, but this information will be helpful for you to see their  competency and progress within specific areas.  Please note, we have been reteaching in specific areas based on the exam results, but this information is quite helpful if your child will receive some additional support at home.  Students also were asked to bring home their Problem Set books from Unit 1 as well. This could be a source of material for review.

Mathematics:  We did Lesson 10, Multidigit multiplication with decimal numbers using the area model and traditional algorithm.  (EX.  33 x 4.6).
Homework Alert for an unusual Friday assignment:  Students were given Lesson 10 HW

Ballroom Dance: Video Ballroom Dance Appreciation and Discussion Day with Ms. Monique

Language Arts/ Ballroom Dance:  Students wrote acrostic poems for a cross-curriculum assignment for ballroom dance.

Spelling:  Additional work within their first unit's packet; differentiated work for students with special lists:  exploring definitions with a dictionary

Writing:  Students wrote summative papers comparing two mystery novels on 2-3 points:

The author's use of description, the creation of interesting characters, the writing of a better mystery novel.  In each case the students were asked to take a position, explain why, and support their position with an example from the story.

Thursday

Mathematics.  Students got feedback on their homework in small groups, and did an exit ticket on multi-digit multiplication and estimation. No new math was  held today.

Class meeting: we refocused on class behavioral expectations and did a short writing assignment focused on the theme of empathy:  "How others see us at home in terms of helpfulness."  We also established some new jobs and refined our procedures for transitions and cooperative work.

Language Arts:  The writer craft and description II: writing descriptions of setting, including multiple senses, and revealing things about the character through interaction with setting.  Reading, finding examples in our personal books, sharing in teams.

Spelling:  Students have a spelling packet this week.  A second set of pages was assigned for homework (unscramble and alphabetize).  Students who scored 80% or more on the spelling pretest were asked to develop an additional list of difficult words from their current novels. They did this in pairs or teams.  Their differentiated homework is to use these new words in sentences of their own making.

Seesaw:  I asked students to share a favorite piece of in their own in class writing from their journals for a little sharing and to connect the classroom to home for a moment.
